Free Crochet Pattern - Penquin Potholder




Materials: J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, Art. A.64: 2 balls of No. 12 Black and 1 ball of No. 1 White. A few yards of No. 10-A Canary Yellow and No. 43 Dk. Yellow. Steel Crochet Hooks No. 4 and No. 7. 1 bone or plastic ring. Padding material of your choice.

FRONT – Body: Starting at center with double strand of White and No. 4 hook, ch 30.
1st Rnd: 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across, 3 sc in last ch; working along opposite side of starting chain, make sc in each ch across.
2nd Rnd: Sc in each sc around, increasing 3 sc evenly on each end-to inc 1 sc, make 2 sc in 1 sc. Repeat 2nd rnd until piece measures 6 inches long. Break off.


SIDE PIECE: Mark off center sc at each end. Skip 4 sc from center sc.
1st Row: Attach double strand of Black to next sc and, picking up back loop of each sc, sc in each sc across to within 4 sc of center sc on opposite end. Ch 1, turn.
2nd - 7th Rows: Dec 1 sc-to dec 1 sc, work off 2 sc as 1 sc-sc in each sc across to within last 2 sc, dec 1 sc. Ch 1, turn. Break off. Complete other side to correspond.


RIGHT FLIPPER: Skip 18 free sc loops on last White row.
1st Row: Using No. 7 hook, attach a single-strand of Black and, picking up free loop of each sc, sc in next 8 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Ch 1, turn.
2nd Row: 2 sc in first sc, sc in next 7 sc, dec 1 sc. Ch 1, turn.
3rd Row: Dec 1 sc, sc in next 7 sc, 2 sc in last sc. Ch 1, turn.
4th Row: Repeat 2nd row.
5th Row: Dec 2 sc, sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in last sc. Ch 1, turn.
6th Row: Dec 1 sc, sc in next 3 sc, dec 2 sc. Ch 1, turn.
7th Row: Work off 3 sc as 1 sc. Break off. Make Left Flipper to correspond.


HEAD: Starting at center with double strand of Black and No. 4 hook, ch 2.
1st Rnd: 7 sc in 2nd ch from hook.
2nd Rnd: 2 sc in each sc around.
3rd Rnd: Sc in each sc, increasing 7 sc evenly around. Repeat 3rd rnd until piece measures 2 ¾ inches in diameter. Break off.


EYE: Starting at center with a single strand of White and No. 7 hook, ch 2.
1st Rnd: 7 sc in 2nd ch from hook.
2nd Rnd: 2 sc in each sc around.
3rd Rnd: *2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around. Break off.


PUPIL: Using a single strand of Black and No. 7 hook, work as for Eye until 2 rnds have been completed. Break off. Sew Pupil to Eye, then Eye to Head. Sew Head to Body.


BEAK: Using a double strand of Canary Yellow and No. 4 hook, ch 7.
1st Row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn.
2nd Row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.
3rd Row: Dec 1 sc, sc in next 2 sc, dec 1 sc. Ch 1, turn.
4th - 5th Rows: Repeat 2nd row.
6th Row: Dec 2 sc.
7th Row: Dec 1 sc. Break off. Sew Beak in place.


FOOT (Make 2): Using a double strand of Canary Yellow and No. 4 hook, ch 4.
1st Row: 2 dc in 4th ch from hook. Ch 3, turn.
2nd Row: 2 dc in first dc, 3 dc in next dc, 3 dc in top of starting chain. Ch 3, turn.
3rd Row: Dc in first dc, (dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc) twice; dc in next dc, dc in top of turning chain. Ch 4, turn.
4th Row: Dc in first dc, (half dc in next dc, dc in next dc, tr in next dc, dc in next dc) twice; half dc in next dc, dc in next dc, tr in top of turning chain. Break off. Embroider webbing on Feet with Dk. Yellow. Sew Feet in place.

BOW TIE: Using a single strand of Black and No. 7 hook, ch 12.
1st Row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across. Ch 1, turn.
2nd - 5th Rows: Dec 1 sc, sc in each sc across to within last 2 sc, dec 1 sc. Ch 1, turn.
6th Row: 2 sc in first sc, sc in next sc, 2 sc in last sc. Ch 1, turn.
7th - 8th Rows: Sc in each sc across, Ch 1, turn.
9th Row: Dec 1 sc, sc in next sc, dec 1 sc. Ch 1, turn.
10th Row: Repeat 6th row.
11th - 13th Rows: 2 sc in first sc, sc in each sc across, 2 sc in last sc. Ch 1, turn.
14th Row: Repeat 7th row. Break off. Sew in place.


BUTTON (Make 3): Using a single strand of Black and No. 7 hook, ch 2, 7 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Break off. Sew in place.


BACK: Work as for Front, using double strand of Black for entire body and omitting eye, flipper, bow tie and buttons. Do not embroider feet.

For Padding, cut lining material slightly smaller than crocheted pieces. Tack to wrong side of one piece, then complete potholder according to directions. Sew Front and Back pieces together. With Black sc closely around bone ring. Sew to top.
