Free Crocheted Work Basket - Vintage / Antique Pattern from 1940s


MATERIALS: Lily Skytone Mercerized Crochet Cotton—1 ball Cream and 2 balls Skipper Blue (or other desired colors). Lily Pearl Cotton Size 3—1 ball each Yellow and Lt. Green. Crochet Hook size 3.

BASE: Use 2 strands of Blue
Row 1: Ch 43, 4 dc in 5th st from hook, dc in next 37 sts, 9 dc in end st, in other side of chain, dc in next 37 sts, 4 dc in next st, sl st in top of starting chain.
ROW 2: Ch 3, turn, dc in same st, * (2 dc in next st) 4 times, dc in 37 dc, (2 dc in next st) 4 times, * 3 dc in next st. Repeat from * to *. Dc in next st, sl st in 1st 3-ch.
ROW 3: Ch 3, turn, dc in same st, * (dc in next st, 2 dc in next) 5 times, dc in 35 dc, (2 dc in next, dc in next) 5 times, * 3 dc in next. Repeat from * to *. Dc in next st, sl st in 1st 3-ch.
ROW 4: Ch 3, turn, 2 dc in next dc, holding final 2 loops on hook, draw 2 strands of Cream thru these 2 loops, completing dc. Working over Blue and starting end of Cream, * 2 dc in next dc, dc in next, 2 dc in next, * pull up Blue taut and thru final 2 loops of last dc and repeat from * to *, working over Cream. Make 3 more blocks, alternating colors. (With Blue, dc in next 5 dc, with Cream, dc in next 5 dc) for 7 more blocks. Alternating colors, repeat from * to * for 11 more blocks. Continue in same way. End with 2 Blue dc, sl st in 1st 3-ch, joining Cream.
ROW 5: With Cream, ch 3, turn, dc in next 2 dc, then alternating colors, make a 5-dc-block in Blue over each Cream block and a Cream block over each Blue block. End with 2 Cream dc, sl st in 3-ch. Fasten off Cream. (Turn and make dc around in Blue, widening at ends to keep work flat) for 4 rows, then a row of sc. Fasten off. Steam and press on back.

LID: Repeat Base but add edge of Ch 1, (hdc in next sc, 2 dc in next, dc in next, hdc in next, sc in next) around. Fasten off.

SIDES: Use 2 strands of Blue
Row 1: Ch 240 and join, ch 3, 239 dc on chain, sl st in 3-ch.
ROW 2: Ch 3, dc in next 4 dc, (5 dc in Cream, 5 dc in Blue) around. With Cream, sl st in 1st 3-ch.
ROW 3: Ch 3, dc in 4 dc, (5 dc in Blue, 5 dc in Cream) around. With Blue, sl st in 1st 3-ch. Fasten off Cream.
ROW 4: With Blue, ch 3, dc around and join, sl st in next dc.
ROW 5: Ch 3, 8 Blue dc, then using 1 strand of Pearl Cotton, make (5 Yellow dc, 2 Blue dc, 4 Green dc, 9 Blue dc) around. With Green, sl st in 3-ch.
ROW 6: Ch 3, 2 Green dc, (4 Blue, 3 Yellow, 1 Blue, 1 Green, 1 Blue, 3 Yellow, 4 Blue, 3 Green) around. With Blue, sl st in 3-ch.
ROW 7: Ch 3, 2 Blue dc, (4 Green, 2 Blue, 5 Yellow, 9 Blue) around. With Blue, sl st in 3-ch. Fasten off Yellow and Green. Repeat Row 4 three times, then a row of sc. Fasten off. Sew lower edge to Base.


BRACELET: With Yellow, ch 2, 9 sc in starting st, sc in back loop of each sc around and around for 8 1/2". Fasten off. Lap ends and sew together. Make a 2nd ring in Green. Sew 1/4" apart crosswise on center of lid.

BUTTON: With Blue, ch 2, sc in starting st. In back loops, (2 sc in each sc) 6 times, (sc in next, 2 sc in next) 3 times, sc in each sc for 2 rows, (sc in every 2nd st) 10 times, stuff hard with cotton and close top with sl sts. Sew to center-front 1/2" below top. Make a chain in Blue to fit loosely over button, skip last st, sl st in each remaining st. Sew under edge of lid above button.
Stiffen basket by rubbing and patting with a cloth dipped in hot, thick, cooked starch. Cut a heavy white cardboard oval to fit inside base, and weight down. Weight down Lid too, to keep it flat. Cut a long strip of thin cardboard and roll to fit inside the basket to brace sides. Fasten another strip snugly around outside. Pull sides up to an even height . When perfectly dry, sew lid to sides between 8 scallops across back edge. Give 3 coats of White Shellac (purchase at hardware store; regular shellac is quite yellow-orange).

MATERIALS:
Crochet Cotton Size 30 and Steel Crochet Hook No. 10 or 11 Finished size approximately 14 inches (Size 10 thread and size 7 steel hook to makes larger doily)



Starting at center, ch 8. Join with sl st to form ring.


1st Rnd: Ch 6 (to count as tr and ch 2), 11 tr in ring with ch-2 between, ch 2, sl st in 4th st of ch-6.


2nd Rnd: Sl st in next ch, sl st in sp, ch 8, *tr in next sp, ch 4. Repeat from * around. Join last ch-4 with sl st in 4th st of starting chain.

1940s Queen Anne's Lace Motif Free Crochet Pattern

Use for tablecloths, bedspreads, runners, etc.
MATERIALS: Crochet, size 20, and steel crochet hook No. 8, motif measures 4 3/4" in diameter and requires about 24 yds of thread. Fill-in motif requires about 5 yds. Allow extra thread for edging. (Can also use size 10 thread and a size 7 steel crochet hook, though motifs will be different size.)
FIRST MOTIF
Ch 6, join with sl st.
1ST RND: Ch 6, * tr in ring, ch 2,. Repeat from * 6 more times, join to 4th st of ch-6 (8sps).
2ND RND: Ch 4, 4 tr in 1st sp, * ch 2, 5 tr in next sp. Repeat from * around. Join last ch-2 to 4th st of ch-4.
3RD RND: Ch 4, tr in same place as sl st, tr in next 4 tr, * tr in 1st ch of ch-2, ch 3, tr in next ch of same ch-2, tr in next 5 tr. Repeat from * around. Join last ch-3 to 4th st of ch-4; sl st in 1st tr of group.

Free Santa Claus Crochet Pattern in Worsted Weight Yarn


Finished Santa is about 11 inches tall. You can get an idea of gauge by the beard starting chain is about 3 inches for 20 chain stitches with the No. 1 steel hook. Adorable traditional Santa Claus!

MATERIALS:
Worsted Weight Yarn 3 oz. Red, 1 oz. each Black and White
Size G crochet hook, steel crochet hook No.1
11 inch white hair doll, 4 snaps, polyester fiberfill or other filling
Suit and hat are worked with G hook. Boots are worked with steel hook No. 1
JACKET: With Red ch 46, dc in 4th st from hook, 1 dc in each remaining st of ch, turn each row.
2ND ROW: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each of the next 10 dc, decrease in next 2 sts (to decrease: * yarn over hook, insert in next st, pull loop through, yarn over and work off 2 loops, repeat from * once, yarn over and work off all loops at one time), 1 dc in each of the next 18 dc, decrease in next 2 sts, 1 dc in each of the last 11 sts.
3RD ROW: Ch 3, 1 dc in each of the next 10 dc, decrease in next 2 sts, 1 dc in each of the next 16

COLLAR: With wrong side of work toward you, attach White in 1st free st at right hand corner work in popcorn st across row in same manner to about 1/4 inch from opposite corner, cut yarn.
CUFFS: Attach White at sleeve edge, work a popcorn st in same space, * skip 1 dc, popcorn st in next dc, repeat from * 4 times, join, cut yarn.
BELT: With Black ch 3, sc in 2nd st from hook, 1 sc in next st of ch, ch 1, turn.
2ND ROW: 1 sc in each sc, ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row until belt measures 13 inches or desired length, cut yarn.
BUCKLE: With White ch 14, join to form a ring and work 1 sl st in each st of ch, join, cut yarn leaving a length. Thread into needle and sew to opposite side to form a slide for belt. Place buckle on belt.
HAT: With White ch 34, join being careful not to twist ch, ch 3 and work a popcorn st in same space, * ch 1, skip 1 st, popcorn st in next st, repeat from * 15 times, ch 1, join in 1st popcorn st, cut yarn.
2ND RND: Attach Red in same space, sc in same space, 1 sc in each remaining st (34 sc), join each round and ch 3 to turn each round.
NEXT 4 Rnds: Working in dc, decrease 4 sts evenly spaced.
7TH RND: Work even in dc.
8TH RND: Working in dc, decrease 4 sts evenly spaced. Repeat the last 2 rounds twice.
13TH RND: Decrease 2 sts, cut yarn.
POMPOM: Wind White 30 times over a 3\8 inch cardboard, tie one end, trim and shape. Sew to point of hat.
PANTS: Front: With Red ch 22, dc in 4th st from hook, 1 dc in each remaining st of ch, ch 3 to turn all rows.
2ND ROW: Working in dc, increase 1 dc at the beg and end of row. Work 2 rows even in dc.
5TH and 6TH ROWS: Decrease 1 dc at the beg and end of each row.
7TH ROW: Start leg: 1 dc in each of the next 8 dc, ch 3, turn. Work 3 rows even.
11TH ROW: Decrease 1 dc at beg and end of row, ch 1, turn.
12TH ROW: Working in sc, decrease 1 sc at the beg and end of row (to decrease, * insert hook in next st, pull loop through, repeat from * once, yarn over and work off all loops atone time). Work 1 row even in sc, cut yarn. With wrong side of 6th row toward you, attach Red in 1st free st and work other leg to correspond. Work another section in same manner for back. Sew seams.
BOOT: Upper section: With Black ch 19, sc in 2nd st from hook, 1 sc in each remaining st of ch, ch 1 to turn all rows.
2ND ROW: Working in sc, decrease 1 sc at the beg and end of row. Work 1 row even. Repeat the last 2 rows once.
6TH ROW: Same as 2nd row. Work 2 rows even.
9TH ROW: 1 sc in each of the 1st 5 sc, 2 s d c in each of the next 2 sc ( s d c: yarn over hook, insert in st, pull loop through, yarn over and work off all loops at one time), 1 sc in each of the last 5 sc.
10TH ROW: 1 sc in each of the 1st 5 sc, 1 s d c in next s d c, 2 s d c in each of the next 2 s d c, 1 s d c in next s d c, 1 sc in each of the last 5 sts.
NEXT 2 ROWS: Work 1 sc in each sc and 1 s d c in each s d c working 2 s d c in each of the 2 s d c at center of each row, cut yarn. Sew the 2 side edges together.
SOLES: With Black ch 7, 3 sc in 2nd st from hook, 1 s d c in each of the next 2 sts, 1 dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, 3 dc in last st, working on opposite side of ch, 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next st, 1 s d c in each of the next 2 sts, join in 1st sc, cut yarn. Sew sole to upper section. Work another boot in same manner. Sew boots to leg of pants overlapping the boots. Place pants on doll and stuff. Place jacket on doll and stuff upper part with filling.
EYEBROWS: Cut two 1/2 inch strips of White and glue in position.
MOUSTACHE: Cut three-1 inch length of White. Sew together at center, comb and trim. Glue in position.
BEARD: With White and No. 1 hook, ch 20 (about 3 inches), cut yarn. Cut sixty- 4 inch lengths of White. Pull 3 of these lengths through each st of ch. Fold lengths in half, comb and trim as illustrated. Place in position and tack at intervals to hair and collar. Place hat and belt in position.
