Friendship Knot Bedspread Free Crochet Pattern

From the 1930s, this design is fashioned after the Friendship Knot
Quilt. A great old pattern that uses good old bedspread weight cotton
thread, also known as size 10. The finished size of spread this pattern
makes is not noted (perhaps double bed size). You can make one square
and figure how many you need for the size spread or throw you want to
make.

Materials: Size 10 cotton crochet thread - 20 skeins, 800 yds each and
size 7 steel crochet hook


1. Chain 8 and join with a slip st to form a ring; 16 sc in ring, join with slip
st in first sc.

2. Ch 3, 1 dc in same st as ch 3, *popcorn in next sc, 2 dc in next sc; repeat
from * 6 times, popcorn in last sc, join with a slip st in top of ch 3.

3. Ch 3, 2 dc in same st as ch 3, * ch 3, 3 dc in next st, 1 dc in popcorn, 1 dc
in each of next 2 dc, 1 dc in popcorn, 3 dc in next dc; repeat from *
around, end with 1 dc in popcorn, join as before.

4. Ch 3, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc, * 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc over ch 3 below (corner),
10 dc over next 10 dc; repeat from * around, join.

5. Slip st into top of each next 2 dc below, ch 5, sk 2 dc, 1 dc in next (last)
dc, * ch 2, 1 dc in corner space, ch 2, 1 dc in next dc below, ch 2,
skip 2 dc, 1 dc in next dc (space), 4 more spaces to next corner;
repeat from * around, join with slip st in 3rd st of ch 5.

6. Ch 3, 2 dc in space below, 1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in next space, popcorn in next
dc, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in corner space, popcorn in next dc, * 2 dc in
next space, 1 dc in next dc; repeat from * 5 times, 2 dc in next space,
popcorn in next dc, work corner as before, continue around, join.

7. Ch 3, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc, * popcorn in next dc, 1 dc in each of next 2
dc, 1 dc in popcorn, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) all
in corner space, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc, 1 d c in popcorn, 1 dc in
each of next 2 dc, 1 popcorn in each of next 14 dc; repeat from *
around, join.

8. Slip st into next dc, ch 3, 1 dc in each of next 4 sts, * popcorn in next st, 1
dc in each of next 4 sts, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) all in corner space. 4 dc
over next 4 sts, popcorn in next st, 5 dc over next 5 sts, popcorn in
next st, 8 dc over next 8 sts, popcorn in next st, 5 dc over next 5
sts; repeat from * around, end with a popcorn in last st.

9. Ch 3, 1 dc in next st, * popcorn in next st, 9 dc over next 9 sts, work corner
as before, 9 dc over next 9 sts, popcorn in next st, 5 dc over next 5
sts, popcorn in next st, 2 dc over next 2 sts, popcorn in
next st, 5 dc over next 5 sts; repeat from * around, and join.

10. Ch 3, 13 dc to corner, corner as before, 14 dc over next 14 sts, popcorn in next
st, 8 dc over next 8 sts, popcorn in next st, 14 dc to corner,
continue around, join.

11. Ch 5, skip 2 sts, 1 dc in next st (a space), ch 2, 4 more spaces to next
corner, (ch2, 1 dc, ch 3, 1 dc, ch 2) all in corner space, 1 dc in next
dc, 4 spaces, ch 2, skip 2 sts, popcorn in next st, 4 dc over next 4
sts, 5 spaces to corner, continue around and join.

round 11, 1 dc in next dc, 4 spaces over next 4 spaces, 2 dc in next

skip 2 sts, 7 dc over next 2 spaces, continue around and join.

13. Ch 5, skip 2 sts, 4 dc over next 4 sts, 3 dc over space, 4 spaces to corner,
work corner as before, 4 spaces, a group of 7 dc, 2 spaces, a group of
6 dc, 2 psaces, a group of 7 dc, continue around, join.

14. Ch 3, 2 dc in space, 1 dc in next dc, ch 2, skip 2, a group of 7 dc in next dc,
(2 dc ch 3, 2 dc) in corner space, 4 dc over next space, 3 spaces, a
group of 7 dc, a space, a group of 8 dc, a space (center), 8 dcc, a space, 7 dc,
continue around, join.

15. Ch 3, 3 dc over next 3 sts, 2 dc in space, 1 dc in next dc, ch 2, skip 2 sts, a
group of 7 dc, 2 spaces, ch 2, skip 2, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts,
popcorn in last dc, corner as before, popcorn in first dc, 2 dc in next
2 sts, 3 spaces, a group of 7 dc, a space, a group of 11 dc, space over
center space below, a group of 11 dc, continue around, join.

16. Ch 3, 6 dc over next 6 dc, 5 spaces, ch 2, skip space, 4 dc and a popcorn to
corner, corner as before, popcorn and 4 dc over group below, 5 spaces,
ch 2, skip space, a group fo 8 dc, 3 spaces, a group of 8 dc, continue
around, join.

17. Slip st in top of each of next 2 dc, ch 3, 4 dc over 4 dc below, 8 spaces, work
corner as before, 8 spaces, a group of 5 dc, 5 spaces, a group of 5 dc,
contine around, join, fasten off.

Sew the blocks together carefully with the same cotton. Work a row of
loops of ch-5 loosely round edge.

Fringe: Wrap thread around an 8-inch cardboard, cut at one end. Tie a
fringe of 5 strands each in each loop around edge.

Free 1955 Multi-color Doily Crochet Pattern in 2 Sizes

MATERIALS:

To make a doily approximately 15 inches in diameter: Size 10 Cotton Crochet Thread in Pink, Green, Yellow and White and a Steel Crochet Hook No. 7.

SUNBEAM AFGHAN CROCHET PATTERN - Free Crocheted Afghan Pattern Using Size J Crochet Hook

This is a lovely afghan that's fun to make. The colors pictured were popular at the time the pattern was written. Of course you can make it in any colors or even one color!

Finished Size: Approximately 52" x 72"

Materials: Worsted weight yarn. (AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY "DAWN" KNITTING WORSTED was used for the pictured afghan): 13 ounces each Tangerine, Cocoa, Flame, Potter Gold, and Beige, plus 15 ounces Amber. Crochet Hook Size J.

This pattern automatically creates a nice scalloped edge!

1st STRIPE: With Amber chain (ch) 4, 3 double crochet (dc) in 1st. stitch (st) of ch (shell), ch 4, 3 dc in 1st st of ch, turn, single crochet (sc) in 1st dc of 1st shell, * ch 4, 3 dc in 1st st of ch, turn, sc in 1st dc of last previous shell made, repeat from * until stripe is 72 inches long having same number of shells on right and wrong sides; cut yarn.

2nd STRIPE: With Potter Gold ch 4, 3 dc in 1st st of ch, sl st in same space with last sc of 1st stripe, ch 4, 3 dc in 1st st of ch, turn, sc in 1st dc of 1st shell of 2nd stripe, ch 4, 3 dc in 1st st of ch, turn, sc in 1st dc of 2nd shell of 2nd stripe, sl st in same space with next sc of 1st stripe. Continue working shells in same manner, joining to previous stripe in next sc and having same amount of shells on right and wrong side; cut yarn.

Child's Sweater (ribbed) - 1916 Pattern

Size 3 years or adjust for larger or smaller

These instructions are for a sweater for a child of three years. It is
a long coat sweater with a long but narrow shawl collar and turn-back
cuffs. A smaller or larger sweater can be made from the instructions
by adding or diminishing the umber of rows.

Materials require: For body of sweater 6 balls Princess Pearl Crochet
Cotton, size 3. For collar and cuffs: 1 ball contrasting color. 1 No.
3 bone hook.

Explanation of Terms Used:
ch = ch
dc = double crochet
* = where repetition begins

Instructions: This sweater is made in rib stitch. The rib stitch is
simply double crochet, but taking the back loop of each row of
stitches instead of the front loop, thus making "ribs." Two rows are
necessary to make a "rib."

Begin at the center front as follows: Ch 103; 54 dc; turn; 54 dc;
turn; 54 dc on preceding row of dc; 6 dc over ch; continue in same
way, taking 6 dc more over the ch to form the neck and shoulders,
until you have 102 dc. You should now have 18 rows or 9 ribs. Make 6
ribs of 102 dc for the shoulder, then cut down to 76 dc to allow for
armhole; make 4 ribs for under-arm; to give fullness at the bottom of
the garment, add 1 rib of 50 dc and 1 last rib of 30 dc.

Back: Ch 79 for 78 dc; make 2 ribs of 78 dc, the ch 25 for above the
armhole, on which make 24 dc and 78 dc over the preceding; 6 ribs of
102 dc for the shoulder, then 2 ribs of 101 dc to make neck; 6 ribs
100 dc for middle of back, then 2 ribs 101 dc; 6 ribs 102 dc; and 2
ribs 78 dc for under-arm.

Sleeve: Ch 43 for 42 dc (using 1 ch to turn) add 4 ch for 3dc at top
of sleeve; turn; then 45 dc; continue like this for 7 rows, always
adding 3 dc at top of sleeve. At 8th row, to give fullness at top of
sleeve, do not work on 20 dc at bottom of sleeve; at 10th row, work to
the bottom; at 12th row, you should have 60 dc; do not increase any
more; at 16th row, 35 dc only; at 24th row, 35 dc only. You now come
to the middle of the sleeve. Make second half similarly, reversing
order of instructions.

Collar: Ch 4 for 3 dc; 3 dc; increase 1 every 4th row until you have
17 dc. Make the required length and narrow to correspond with first
half.

Cuffs: Ch 18; * make 17 dc; repeat from * until cuff is required
length. Use a seam to join sleeve, and also to join parts of garment.

Materials for Either the Oval or Round Doily: Crochet cotton No. 3 or No. 5 and crochet needle No. 5.

Explanation of Stitches:
p = picot: Formed on a ch by joining the last four sts (or any given number) into a ring by working a sl or a d in the fourth st from hook. In the directions, a sl is understood unless otherwise designated. In a few cases the picot is joined by a treble, in which case it is mentioned within the pattern directions.
d = double crochet: this is US single crochet
t = treble crochet: this is US double crochet
sl = slip stitch: Having a st on the needle, put hook through work; draw thread through work and loop on needle at same time.

Tina's Note: Likely you will not be making these to use as an asbestos mat cover, so work to desired size before border, then add border and stop, skipping the lining.

Round Doily or Mat:

Ch 5, join in a ring. 1st rnd: Ch 3, 15 t in ring, join with sl. 2nd rnd (of star stitch): Ch 3, draw loops through second ch st, through first ch st, through st where ch starts, through next t; this gives 5 loops on needle, thread through all 5 at once, ch 1 (this completes one star stitch), for second and following stars: * draw loops through the eye of star, through the loops at back of star, through the last t worked into, through the next t, making 5 loops, thread through all 5 at once, ch 1; repeat from * around. Make this second round quite tight. 3rd rnd: 3 t in the eye of every star, beginning the round with 3 ch and finishing with a sl st. 4th rnd: Like 2d, except make the start stitch rather loose and 6 loops instead of 5 loops, through 2 t instead of but 1. 5th, 7th, 9th, 11th and all succeeding rounds of odd numbers: Like 3d round. 6th, 8th, 10th, etc., Like 4th round.

Alternate the star and treble rounds until the work is two rounds larger than the asbestos mat to be covered, ending with a treble round.

Border: Ch 5, sl between groups of t; repeat round. 2nd rnd: Sl to middle of 5 ch, * ch 1, over next 5 ch make (1 t, picot, 1 t, p, 1 t, p, 1 t, p 1 t) sl on middle of next 5 ch; repeat from *.

For the Lining: Work a round of double crochet at the back of the round of trebles that appears outside the mat, having laid the asbestos mat on to find this line; crochet into the back loop of stitches, join with sl. 2nd rnd: Ch 5, miss 3d, sl in next st; repeat from * around. 3d and 4th rounds: Like 2d. Run a cord through the last round and draw up tightly and tie after work is slipped over mat.

Oval Doily or Mat:

To make the oval mat, treble rounds and star stitch rounds are alternated, and the same border used as for the round mat. Having the asbestos mat of the size required, make a chain as long as the difference between the breadth and length of the mat, less 3 ch sts, turn.

1st round: 7 t in fourth st from needle, 1 t in each ch st, 8 t in last st of ch, working around the other side of the ch, 1 t in each ch st, join with sl. 2d round: Star st, with 5 loops around the ends of the work; with 6 loops (working into 2 t) along the sides. 3rd round: 3 t in each star eye around the ends of the work, 2 t in each eye along the sides. 4th round: Star st with 6 loops throughout. 5th round: Like 3d round. Alternate the 4th and 5th rounds to the required size.

This is a fun potholder and though the picture is in black and white, it works up nicely with different colors for the rounds of petals. I have a few of Mama's that she made in variegated that are lovely. And take a tip from her...if you make one (not two and sewing them together), this makes a great little dish cloth!

Materials: Knit-Cro-Sheen, 1 ball; steel crochet hook No. 7; one bone ring
Starting at center, ch 6. Join with a sl st to form ring.
1st rnd: Ch 1, 15 sc in ring. Join with sl st in first sc.
2nd rnd: Ch 3 (to count as 1 dc), dc in same place as sl st, 2 dc in ea st around (30 sts). Join with sl st in top of first ch-3.
3rd rnd: Ch 1, sc in same place as sl st, * hdc in front loop of next st, 5 dc in front loop of next st, hdc in front loop of next st, sc in front lp of next 2 sts. Repeat from * around.. Join last sc in same place as first sc.
4th rnd: Ch 3, dc in remaining lp of ea st of round before last, increasing 15 sts evenly around (45 sts). Join. Repeat 3rd and 4th rounds alternately until piece measures 6 1/4 inches and end with 3rd rnd: Fasten off.
Make another piece same as the first and sew these two pieces together along outer edges of dc rnd, having petals on outside. Sew on bone ring ( or simply chain a couple inches to make a loop).

Using brown. ch 75.
lst row. 1 sc in 2nd st and in each of remaining sts on chain (74 a c) ch 1, turn. Work eleven rows in dark, make 1 sc in each sc of row below taking up one thread of stitch only.

13th row. Attach light green and work 16 rows same as brown, attach brown and work same as first stripe of brown. Fasten yarn. Fold piece in center and crochet sides together within 4 1/2 inches of top of bag. continuing around both edges using light green. For this joining at and edging, fasten yarn at one corner of folded bag, make 1 sc, 1 half dc in one sp, ch 1, 1 ac, 1 half dc in next space, repeat around.

Sew handles to bag using a large needle and light green yarn.

Giant Mesh Tablecloth - Free Crochet Pattern

Materials:
Size 10 thread - pattern calls for 100 big balls, though yardage is not mentioned
Steel crochet hook size 5

Gauge:
2 spaces = 1 inch and 2 rows = 1 inch when block
Each square measure about 19.5 inches before blocking and about 20.5 inches after blocking.
Completed tablecloth measures about 63 x 104 inches

Square:
Starting at center, ch 11, join with sl st.
Rnd 1: Ch 4 (to count as tr), 4 tr in ring, (ch 7, 5 tr in ring) 3 times; ch 7, join with sl st to 4th st of ch-4.
Rnd 2: Ch 4, 4 tr, * 4 tr in corner sp (space), ch 7, 4 tr in same corner sp, tr in next 5 tr. Repeat from * around. Join.
Rnd 3: Ch 4, tr in 8 tr, * 4 tr in corner sp, ch 7, 4 tr in same corner sp, tr in next 13 tr. Repeat from * around. Join.
Rnd 4: Ch 7, * skip 3 tr, tr in next 9 tr, 4 tr in next sp, ch 7, 4 tr in next 9 tr, ch 3. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st to 4th st of ch-7.
Rnd 5: Ch 4, * 3 tr in next sp, tr in next tr, ch 3, skip 3 tr, tr in next 9 tr, 4 tr in next sp, ch 7, 4 tr in same sp, tr in 9 tr, ch 3, skip 3 tr, tr in next tr. Repeat from * around. Join.
Rnd 6 - 20: Work in this manner, following chart, making ch-3 for spaces and ch-7 for each corner sp, and joining each rnd with a sl t. The heavy line on the chart shows where each rnd begins. At the end of the 20th rnd, join and fasten off.
Make 15 squares to arrange 3 x 5 and sew together on wrong side with neat over-and-over sts.

Edging:
Attach threat at outer edge and work a row of spaces all around cloth, turning corners as before. Join. Then work one round of tr's all around, gauging sts to keep work flat and turning corners as before. Join.
Next Rnd: Tr in each tr around, turning corners as before. Join and fasten off.

MATERIALS: Baby Yarn: 3 ply, 16 oz.color A and 1 oz. color B. Size 2 bone crochet hook (equivalent to 2.20 mm hook). Set is worked in color A except for trim on sleeves of jacket.

AFGHAN
Ch 173. Work back and forth in sc for 44 rows for center strip; ch 5, turn. Work 1 dtr in first st, * ch 2, skip 2 sts, 1 dtr in next st, ch 2, skip 2, 1 dtr in each of next 2 sts; repeat from * across row; ch 1, turn.
Row 1: Work 1 sc in each st; ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Skip first st, * 1 sc, ch 1, 1 sc in next st, skip 2 sts; repeat from * across row; ch 3, turn.
Row 3: Work 3 dc in each ch 1 space. Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows 12 times. Work other side to correspond.
Border
Work 7 rows of sc around entire cover, working 3 sc in each corner st.
Edging
Work in pattern (Rows 2 and 3) twice, around entire cover; do not skip any sts at corners. Repeat Row 2 once. Fasten off.

JACKET
Yoke
Ch 51. Work back and forth in dc for 9 rows, then work over first 15 sts. Increase 1 st at neck edge only, on each row for 9 rows. Fasten off. Omitting 18 sts for back of neck, attach yarn and work other side to correspond. Join front and back of yoke at underarm with a ch of 8. Starting at left front edge, work back and forth in patterns as given for carriage cover, for 8 in. Fasten off.
Sleeve (make 2)
Starting at center of underarm ch, work back and forth in pattern for 6 in. (do not close sleeve).
Work 6 rows of sc for cuff. Fasten off. With color B, work 1 row of picot sts all around edge of jacket and cuffs. Sew sleeve seams.

BONNET
Ch 3, join with a sl st to form a ring.
Row 1: Work 6 sc in ring.
Row 2: Work 2 sc in each st.
Row 3: * 1 sc in each of first 2 sts, 1 dc in 2nd st of previous row; repeat from * for 1 row.
Row 4: * 1 sc in each of the first 3 sts, 1 dc around the post of the dc of previous row, inserting hook sideways; repeat from * for 1 row. Continue increasing 1 st in each gore for 16 rows. Omitting 1 gore for back of neck, work back and forth on remaining gores for 3 1\2". Work 5 rows of sc across front edge. Work 1 row of sc across neck edge, skipping every 3rd st. Work 4 rows of sc, st for st, for neckband. Fasten off. Turn back on first row of sc and work 2 rows of shell st. Fasten off.

BOOTIES
Ch 12. Work back and forth in sc for 10 rows. Ch 28. Join to beginning of last row. Work 9 rows of sc around 3 sides of square and the 28 ch. Fasten off and sew tog. across bottom. Starting at center of back on top of boot, work back and forth in pattern for 3 in. Work 1 row of shell st. Fasten off. Sew back seam.

Size 7 Steel Crochet Hook

Work this pattern as tightly for best results.

Ch 16, turn, sk 1 ch and make 1 sl st in ea ch and turn.

Row 2: 1 ch, 15 sl st, taking the sts on the back threads only; turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, 7 sl st, 1 Berry (make Berry: yarn over hook and through 2 lps, keep the other lops on hook, yarn over and pick up a lp in same st and make dc, a lp in same st and make dc, make 3 more dc in same st so there are 5 in all, then pull so you have 5 in all, and then pull through the one you kept on the hook. The right side must be the left--make 7 more sl st.

Row 4: Ch 1 and work 15 sl sts.

Row 5: 5 sl st, 1 Berry, 3 sl st, 1 Berry and 5 sl sts.

Row 6: 15 sl sts.

Row 7: 7sl sts, 1 Berry and 7 sl sts.

Rows 8-9: 15 sl sts, ch 34 and join to the other end of the instep tab and work 40 sl stls around the instep tab and then 1 in each of the chains. Make 4 more rows without out joining the sl sts and then make 4 rows; dec 1 in center of the back and 1 in center of the front. Turn the work on the wrong side and join the sole by taking up the single inside loop of the opposite sts and working them off together with single crochet.

Go back to the foundation chain in center front and work sc all around.

Next Row: Ch 4, sk 1 and work 1 dc. Ch 1, sk 1, 1 dc. Repeat all around. Join with sl st.

Third Row Off Top: Ch r, 2 dc in second space, ch 1, 2 dc in same st, 1 dc in next space of second row. Repeat all around.

Rows 4-6: Work the same, not joining front. Two front edges of top are finished with small picots, 1 in each space.

Toe 7: 1 dc in center of scallop, 1 picot ( Ch 3, 1 sc in first of 3 ch) 1 dc, 1 picot, 1 dc, 1 picot, 1 dc, 1 sc in next dc. Repeat all around to to top of bootie.

Size 5 crochet cotton and size 7 steel crochet hook

Ch 7 and join to form a ring.

Row 2: 22 tr into ring, join.

Row 3: Ch 6, sk 1, 1 dc into 2nd, ch 2 and work 1 dc into 4th and continue in this manner, always skipping 1.

Row 4: Ch 15, sk 3 and work 12 dc into the long chain, fasten with sc on top of dc of 3rd Row. This forms a petal. Repeat around.

Row 5: Same as Row 4 except instead of fastening the 12 dc on top of the 3rd Row, fasten it into the space at the back of Row 3. Repeat around. After finishing the last petal, work back with a sl st on the first petal or 5th row until you reach the point.

Row 6. *Ch 5, 1 sc into point of next petal of Row 4. Ch 5, 1 sc into the point of petal of row 5. Repeat from *.

Row 7: Ch 3, 3 dc into chain of previous row, ch 3. Repeat in every space.

Row 8: Work 1 set of picots (ch 5, 1 sc in 2nd from start. Ch 6, 1 sc in 3rd, ch 1) and fasten with 1 sc into 1st space of previous row.

Row 9: Same as Row 8 except make shorter by leaving out 5 sets of picots at end of row. Turn.

Rows 10 - 16: Work same as for Row 9.

Row 17: Work as for Row 9 except in the back of the bonnet make only one picot instead of a set of picots. This will draw in the bonnet at the back for proper shaping.

Row 18: 1 dc, ch 3 for picot, 1 dc, ch 3 for picot, 1 dc (first scallop now made). Repeat around. Fasten off and attach ribbon for ties as desired. If you wish, fashion a small rosette ribbon bow and sew to the side of the bonnet as shown in the picture. Lovely!

This is one beautiful pattern to create an heirloom baby afghan that will be appreciated down through the generations. How impressive a shower gift this one will be! If you really want a stunning baby blanket, back this with a piece of satin (satin is quite inexpensive, but very impressive and silky for baby, too) and sandwich a piece of batting between--Warm and Natural or a polyester batting. Just so very special!

The Patterns Are Coming!

Good crochet day to you! And here you are, so kind to visit this blog for your free crochet pattern or maybe hundreds of free crochet patterns and there isn't even an edging pattern to be found! How disappointing!

If you bookmark this blog, I promise to make it up to you. My New Year's resolution is to finally share all these crochet patterns that I've toted around the world for upmteen years. This is day one, which is blog-setting-up-day. The patterns will begin to appear as in direct proportion to the time I can make prepare and load them up here on the blog.

In the meantime, if you have any particular desiderata (that'd be your wishes) for particular kinds of crochet patterns, drop me an email. I may not have time to answer your email (because you want me scanning and uploading those patterns now doncha?), though I will post patterns based on two criteria -- most desired and most unusual. So if I get a hundred requests for baby crochet patterns, you will be seeing lots of baby crochet patterns. If I get a request for men's checkered suspenders with a watch fob using braid crochet (and if I can find a pattern for that!), then you'll see it here.

Most patterns posted here are no longer under copyright (in other words, they are now in the public domain) and a few will be original patterns. The bulk of the patterns are timeless even though they are antique. These are rare finds. Enjoy helping yourself and feel free to tell your crocheting friends!
